SkinPen Microneedling at Pure Vitality Rx

SkinPen is an FDA-cleared microneedling device that helps improve the appearance of facial acne scars and neck wrinkles by getting your skin to repair itself. No lasers, no weeks hiding indoors, and no miracle creams that cost more than your car payment. Just your own skin, finally doing some work.

At Pure Vitality Rx in Wyckoff, SkinPen is one of our most requested skin treatments. Here's what it is, how it works, and whether it makes sense for you.

How SkinPen microneedling works

SkinPen creates millions of tiny, precise microchannels in the skin. Your body reads those as minor injuries and kicks off its natural repair process, which includes producing new collagen and elastin. That's why microneedling is also called collagen induction therapy.

Over a series of sessions, that repair process helps remodel the skin. Textured scars can look smoother and neck lines can look softer, because the improvement comes from your own tissue rather than something sitting on top of it.

The device matters. SkinPen is medical-grade, with adjustable needle depth so your provider can treat thin skin and thicker, scarred areas differently in the same session. It's also the most widely used microneedling pen among providers, according to a 2025 industry survey.

What SkinPen treats

SkinPen is FDA-cleared for two specific concerns in adults 22 and older:

  • Facial acne scars, for all skin types (Fitzpatrick I through VI). That's a big deal, because many resurfacing treatments carry more risk for medium and deeper skin tones.

  • Neck wrinkles, for Fitzpatrick skin types II through IV.

Patients also tend to notice that their skin looks smoother and more refreshed overall. But acne scars and neck lines are where SkinPen has the clinical data, and those are the results we'll set expectations around in your consultation.

What to expect

  1. Before: We cleanse your skin and usually apply a topical numbing cream so you're comfortable. Plan to avoid sun exposure for 24 hours beforehand.

  2. During: Your provider glides SkinPen over the treatment area, adjusting depth as needed. Most sessions take about 30 minutes. It feels like light vibration and scratching, not stabbing.

  3. After: Your skin will look pink, similar to a mild sunburn, for up to 24 hours. Some tenderness, dryness, itchiness or light peeling is normal over the next few days. Stay out of the sun for 72 hours and wear sunscreen like it's your job.

Most people are back to normal life the next day. Schedule it before a quiet evening, not before a wedding.

How many sessions you'll need

SkinPen works progressively. Your skin keeps remodeling for weeks after each treatment, so results build with every session rather than showing up overnight.

Most patients start with a series of about three sessions, spaced several weeks apart. Deeper acne scarring may need more. Once you've reached your goal, occasional maintenance sessions help keep things there.

We'll give you a realistic number at your consultation, based on what we see, not on a package we're trying to sell.

Who SkinPen is (and isn't) for

SkinPen may be a good fit if you're 22 or older and you have textured acne scarring on your face, or fine lines and creasing on your neck. It's especially worth a look if other resurfacing options weren't recommended for your skin tone.

It's not for everyone. Active acne breakouts, skin infections, certain skin conditions, recent sun damage and some medications can mean waiting or choosing a different treatment. That's what the consultation is for.

Why get SkinPen at Pure Vitality Rx

We don't do cookie-cutter treatments. Every SkinPen plan starts with a consultation where we look at your skin type, scarring or lines, history and goals. From there, we set needle depth, treatment areas and session spacing for you specifically.

We'll also tell you if SkinPen isn't the right call, and what might work better. Shocking, we know.

SkinPen FAQ

Does SkinPen microneedling hurt? With numbing cream, most patients describe it as mild discomfort. Bonier areas like the forehead tend to feel it more.

How long is the downtime? Usually about 24 hours of pinkness. Avoid makeup for the rest of the day, and avoid sun for 72 hours.

When will I see results? Results build gradually over the course of your treatment series as your skin renews.

Is SkinPen safe for darker skin tones? For facial acne scars, SkinPen is cleared for all Fitzpatrick skin types. Your provider will confirm it's right for you.

Is SkinPen the same as at-home microneedling? No. At-home rollers don't reach the same depth or precision, and they aren't cleared to treat acne scars or neck wrinkles.

SkinPen Precision is a microneedling device intended to improve the appearance of facial acne scars in adults 22 and older with all Fitzpatrick skin types, and wrinkles of the neck for Fitzpatrick skin types II to IV. This treatment is not for everyone. Common post-treatment responses include temporary redness, tenderness, itchiness, dryness and peeling. Individual results vary.
